Our facilitation skills workshops are different than others because they focus on the skills necessary to execute the process.
Turpin takes a comprehensive skill-building approach to facilitation skills training. We focus on the skills necessary for participants to execute whatever facilitation situations they face. This means that while working on their own real-life meeting, concepts are introduced, practiced, refined and reinforced. This approach, which includes role plays keeps things grounded and realistic.
Three principles are woven into the fabric of all of Turpin’s facilitation skills sessions.
Facilitating is an extension of presenting. No matter the purpose behind any facilitated event, the content needs to be organized and introduced appropriately. Doing so requires the same skills as presenting. Therefore, each session begins by developing those skills.
Facilitators need to be keenly aware of what’s happening (and not happening) in the room at all times. This means that facilitators need to be engaged in the process. When they’re engaged, they can balance the needs of the meeting while encouraging equal participation among everyone present.
Everyone has what we call a “Default Approach” to facilitating. Some default to the control, agenda-driven side, sometimes stifling productive dialogue. Others encourage too much participation, losing control of the group. Understanding one’s default – and making appropriate adjustments to make up for the associated weaknesses – is key to every facilitator’s success.
Workshop Tailoring
All of our facilitation skills workshops are tailored to the needs
of the organization, team and individuals in the session. The
process starts by identifying learning objectives and determining
the degree of one-on-one coaching and skill reinforcement to best
meet those goals.
We assume that participants have a baseline understanding of the theory of facilitation. Therefore, our facilitation workshops do not cover.
» Training design
» Adult learning theory
» Team building exercises
» Designing group activities
» Where meetings or training sessions should be held
» Exercises designed to keep energy levels high
» Or other issues that are more theoretical than practical
